Futari 2 Person Soaking Tub (‘classical’ style)

The Futari two-person deep soaking tub is Cabuchon’s newest bath for shared bathing. Launched in 2023, it is the latest in our deep soaking tub range, and our second two-seat version.

The name celebrates a strong Japanese connection. The traditional Japanese ofuro has always been an inspiration for this market-leading range, and in this case, the word means ‘couple’ – appropriate for a two-seater bath.

The design of the Futari respects all the most important principles of deep soaking. It has a compact design, the side walls are steeply angled, and the integrated seats ensure that the bather retains an upright, semi-seated posture. These are the three key characteristics of the perfect deep soaking experience.

Description

Futari Two Person Soaking Tub (classic style)

The Futari was developed in response to the popularity of our original two-seat soaking tub, the Xanadu. The most obvious difference between the two is the position of the Futari’s seats. The Xanadu has a symmetrical design that offers bathers a choice: they can sit on one of two shallow seats, either side by side or opposite one another. By contrast, the Futari has two much more clearly defined seats with exceptionally comfortable back rests. Bathers sit at opposite ends, slightly offset.

In this sense, the Futari offers a more ‘classic’ deep soaking experience. The bath has an internal depth of 470mm (18½”) between seat and overflow, and the sculpted seat is raised well above the footwell. This keeps users well supported. The greater depth is important because deeper water tends to buoy up the bather, thereby promoting a sense of weightlessness and comfort. An upright semi-seated posture also takes strain off the neck and shoulders.

In short, the Futari offers all the comfort and other common benefits of a single-seat soaking tub, including making the best use of a relatively compact footprint. With external dimensions of 1600 x 1150mm (63” x 45¼”), it is suitable for use in most bathrooms, and will pass through a doorway of 737mm (29”) with the feet removed.

Key benefits:

  • An excellent 2-person bath for smaller bathrooms
  • A classical ‘deep soaking’ bathing position for maximum comfort
  • Compatible with an overhead shower
  • Available with a bespoke Hydrotherapy spa system
  • The compact design saves both water and energy

Use and Placement:

The Futari deep soaking tub is suitable for all sizes of bathroom, though it is a particularly good choice for smaller bathrooms in which users wish to have the option of comfortable shared bathing.

It is designed primarily as a built-in bath. It can be set into a raised deck or a tiled surround, and it may be installed either as a drop-in bath (with the rim visible) or undermounted (with the rim set below the deck.)

Optionally, however, the bath may be fitted with side panels that cover one to four sides – enabling it to be installed in an alcove, a corner, along a wall or even free-standing. (See Options.)

The Futari may be used with overhead and wall-mounted showers. We can provide an optional bath/shower screen on request.

Access and Fitting:

When turned on its side, the Futari two-person soaking tub will pass through a doorway of 737mm (29”) with the feet removed.

Taps and other fittings (such as hand showers) may be fitted wherever space and good plumbing practices allow. The Futari requires an extended waste / overflow. (The height of the soaking tub means that the cable operating the waste plug needs to be longer than in conventional baths: 1000mm.) We hold a stock and can provide this or, alternatively, a suitable combined filler/overflow.

The overflow is located on the wide rim side, centred along the overall length of the bath. The bath is normally supplied with the waste and overflow holes pre-drilled but they can be left uncut on request. Holes are not usually pre-drilled for taps, hand-showers or other fittings. This gives customers greater control over the placement of such features – decisions which are best made when the bath can be viewed in-situ. The exception is the fitting of hydrotherapy systems and controls, which – for reasons of quality, safety and reliability – must be pre-fitted in the Cabuchon factory.

The Futari is built on a steel chassis. Its height can be adjusted via four screw-threaded feet. These are factory-fitted and set to spread the bath’s weight evenly. During installation, care must be taken to accommodate a sloping or uneven floor. For security, stability and durability, it is essential that the whole of the bath’s weight rests squarely and evenly on the four feet. No weight should rest on any other part of the bath.

More details are provided in the Futari Specification Sheet.

Panels:

The Futari may be built into a raised deck or sunk into a floor. Otherwise, it should be fitted with a side panel. Customers can choose their own custom-built panels, which can be made of wood, tile or stone etc. However, for an extra charge, we can produce a bespoke panel. It will be supplied separately, for on-site installation.

We make panels to cover anything from one to four sides, depending on the intended installation:

  • One side: when fitting into a niche/alcove
  • Two sides: when the Futari is to be used as a corner bath
  • Three sides: for installation against one wall
  • Four sides: when the Futari is to be used free standing

More information and illustrations about panel choices, and details of what and how to order, can be found on our main Deep Soaking Tubs page.

Colour choice:

The use of FICORE® means we can produce the Futari (or its optional side panels) in literally any colour, or in any combination of colours. We can also produce a non-standard matt finish, or we can prime the surface in readiness for a specialist paint finish.

For more details on colour options, please see our Bath Options page.

The Futari as a Hydrotherapy bath:

We have always believed that deep soaking tubs and spa Hydrotherapy systems are perfectly matched.

Consequently, we have ensured that the Futari is compatible with our bespoke Hydrotherapy systems.

The Futari has a classical deep soaking design – albeit made for two people – so it is exceptionally well suited to Hydrotherapy. It has steeply angled side walls that are set close to the body. A close setting enables efficient heat-transfer and an effective hydro-massage action. It also means that the jets can be swivelled for maximum accuracy.

The Futari’s in-built seats are also designed with Hydrotherapy in mind. The lack of strain on the neck or shoulders helps make the user(s) more receptive to the massaging action of the water. This, together with the buoyancy of the deep water, helps to alleviate tension. Please see our Hydrotherapy section for more details.
